How Does a Water Tank Level Sensor Work?
Different water tank monitoring systems measure the amount of water in your tank in different ways. The best option depends on the tank, connectivity and where the monitoring equipment can be installed.
TankMate Radar Tank Sensors
TankMate R3 uses a non-contact radar sensor mounted above the water. The sensor measures the distance between itself and the water surface and converts that measurement into a tank-level reading.
Depending on the model, the reading is transmitted using Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity so the tank level can be viewed remotely.
Smart Water Pressure Sensors
Smart Water systems use a tank sender and pressure-sensing arrangement rather than requiring a radar sensor directly above the water.
This can be particularly useful for underground tanks, driveway tanks, trickle-fed tanks or properties where household Wi-Fi does not reach the tank itself.

A wireless water tank level monitor lets you check water supply without physically inspecting the tank. The right system depends largely on whether Wi-Fi reaches the tank and what other connectivity is available.

How to Check the Water Level in a Rainwater Tank
There are several ways to check how much water remains in a rainwater tank, ranging from simple manual checks to remote electronic monitoring.
Manual Checking
Some tank owners inspect the tank directly or use a simple mechanical indicator. This can provide a basic indication but requires someone to be physically at the property.
Electronic Level Indicator
A water tank level meter or electronic indicator provides a more convenient reading and can remove much of the guesswork involved in estimating remaining water.
Remote Smart Monitoring
A Wi-Fi, wireless or cellular water tank level sensor can provide remote tank readings. With an eligible TankMate setup, the same data can also support our managed water-refill service.

A Managed Water Service, Not Just a Sensor
The $200 monitored-refill subscription is an Artesian & Solway Water service and is separate from the purchase price of the sensor.
The sensor gives us the information. Our water-delivery team provides the monitoring, planning and delivery service behind it.
TankMate LTE/4G units also require their own cellular connectivity subscription after the included first 12 months. Wi-Fi units do not have a cellular connection fee, although optional premium app features may carry separate charges.
The monitored-refill service is available within eligible Artesian & Solway Water delivery areas and requires compatible shared tank data.
Basic help reconnecting sensors, restoring monitoring connections, troubleshooting and minor monitoring-system maintenance is included where reasonably practical. Batteries, replacement sensors, parts, hardware and other chargeable components remain the customer's cost.

How much is the Artesian & Solway monitoring subscription?
The monitored-refill subscription is $200 for the annual season running
from 1 November to 31 October. Sensor costs, installation, optional app
features and LTE connectivity may be separate.
What does the monitoring subscription include?
For eligible customers, it includes remote monitoring of shared tank
data, delivery planning near an agreed threshold, priority-customer
status, a $20 discount on each water delivery and reasonable basic help
reconnecting sensors, troubleshooting monitoring connections and minor
monitoring-system maintenance. Batteries, replacement parts, sensors

Does the 4G sensor have another annual charge?
Yes. The TankMate LTE/4G product includes its first 12 months of
connectivity. The current product information lists a separate $79
annual TankMate connectivity charge after that period.
Can one sensor monitor several connected tanks?
A single sensor may monitor tanks that are connected and maintain a
common water level. Separate independent tanks generally require
separate monitoring equipment.
Can tank monitoring help identify a leak?
Monitoring trends may reveal an unexpected drop or unusual
consumption, but the sensor does not locate or diagnose a leak. A
plumber may be required to investigate.
Can I buy a TankMate sensor anywhere in New Zealand?
Yes. Artesian & Solway Water supplies TankMate and Smart Water tank
monitoring systems to customers throughout New Zealand. Professional installation
and our managed Never Run Out monitoring service are available within our
water-delivery area, subject to location, access and service availability.

Can you monitor tanks at an Airbnb or holiday home?
Yes. Remote tank monitoring is particularly useful for Airbnbs, baches,
rentals and other properties that are not occupied or checked every day.
Does TankMate require mains power?
R3 sensors are powered by three AA batteries and do not require a mains
connection at the tank. Other monitoring systems have different power
requirements.
